Penn Alpha (chartered 1966)
Spring Garden College - Philadelphia, PA
Status: Alumni
Penn Alpha was chartered in 1966 at Spring Garden College. The campus was located in the Northwestern sections of Fairmount Park and was originally chartered as a two-year degree college. During the early 1970's, the college progressed to a four and five-year degree college where weekly meetings averaged 30 to 40 brothers.
The early to mid 1970's proved to be a difficult time for all fraternities and there was no exception for Kappa Sigma Kappa. The organization as a National was stressed where in 1975, Penn Alpha became the last standing active chapter. During the late 1970's, all records of the National were given to Penn Alpha and are currently stored in Elkins Park, PA. At that last meeting, Penn Alpha was given all rights to the future of Kappa Sigma Kappa as a National organization.
The chapter prospered through to 1992 maintaining an averaged 20 to 30 actives on campus. The closure of the chapter came as Spring Garden College closed during the summer of 1992. In the two years prior to the closure, committees were established to locate and salvage any remaining National records which included trips to the late George R. Jefferson, Sr.'s house (the former headquarters located in West Virginia). Other trips included visits to Mildred Jefferson who always welcomed correspondence from the chapter.
Today, Penn Alpha is survived by an active alumni presence who annually gather the first 'full' weekend of every October for a weekend camp-outing. An averaged 30 to 40 alumni brothers participate and we welcome brothers (both active and alumni) from other chapters to camp in South Jersey's swampy pine forests - same location since the early 1970's.
Additional gatherings include a formal dinner event every other year where between 60 to 70 brothers attend -- with wives/friends, over 100 in attendance. The next dinner event is scheduled for April 9th, 2005, in Atlantic City, NJ.
