Maryland Alpha (chartered 1948)
University of Baltimore - Baltimore, MD
Status: Alumni

Maryland Alpha Chapter was chartered at the University of Baltimore in 1948 by predominately W.W.II veterans studying on the GI Bill. From 1948 to 1968, the Chapter was a highly active part of the social scene at the University as well as providing school leadership and more All-American Lacrosse players probably from any fraternity in America. But by 1972, the membership began to peter out and there were only four brothers remaining by 1974. At that time the Chapter merged with Maryland Beta Chapter at the failed Baltimore College of Commerce but as Brother Jim Meyd ('75)advises, it went downhill fast in keeping with anti-fraternity spirit of the times and the University posture. There is little history we can find past that point.

There have been several individual alumni gatherings over the half century since the Chapter was chartered including a major gathering several years ago. But none of that matched the excitement of the reorganization and gala blast that occured on November 10, 2001, at Baltimore's Valley Country Club where 115 brothers and dates...some from the original pledge class...met to eat, drink and be merry, and, flash pictures of their grandkids. It was a memorable evening of remembered handshakes, hugs and pledge paddles dredged up from garages and basements from 40 or more years ago. We found that even after 50 years, that spirit we were promised as pledges remains and we will not let this go again.
